WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SUSO JOHANNESBURG - JOY SHILLUH MWANGI
Director - Joy Shilluh Mwangi
Let's reflect on those words for a moment.
Let's take in the depth of their meaning.
What does it really mean to 'stand up’?
Some may say it is to rise to an upright position on the feet. I say it is to defend or support something or someone you believe in, to confront someone or something fearlessly.
It is refusing to be content, breaking out of your comfort zone, rising up to the challenge.
Stephanie Hessel puts it this way, 'If you want to be a real human being - a real woman, a real man - you cannot tolerate things which put you into indignation, to outrage. You must stand up. I always say to people, 'Look around; look at what makes you happy, what makes you furious and then engage yourself in some action'.
To stand up you need some amount of force. Motivation. Drive.
SUSO is an organisation that has helped instill such a force inside many young individuals like me. It has empowered thousands of youth to eradicate their fears, giving them the necessary courage to stand up for what they believe in. They develop a sense of awareness of self as they understand and interact with the values of Ubuntu ; values such as compassion and respect for humanity. Often people find themselves standing with few or alone. At SUSO we stand up together. 'I am because we are'; I am a SUSONIAN because we are SUSONIANS.
'Shout Out'. Letting our voices be heard by as many individuals from the very tops of our lungs.
At SUSO every voice counts and everyone has a voice. We believe that even the littlest of voices have the ability to shake the world around us. We learn that we are not merely to speak but to be heard; to verbally recognize a problem and address it by realizing a solution.
At SUSO Johannesburg we strive to constantly remind ourselves of these ideas. To look into ourselves and ask, 'Am I a person of integrity?' , 'Do I see the big picture?'. We hope to expand our way of thinking; our way of seeing and understanding situations, cultivate our creativity, explore our imagination, follow our passions, keep growing and growing and to always have fun with it.
We aim to always make and leave a positive impact wherever we are that our results may speak for us.
'Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak', Winston Churchill.
Will you choose to be courageous?
Wamukelekile, welcome to SUSO Johannesburg. Join us as we Stand Up and Shout Out."
